Welcome to Rockhaven Counselling and Therapy

My name is Roger Helyar FBACP, FNCPS, FNCIP

As a counsellor with over 30 years of experience, I provide both short-and long-term counselling to adults, couples, families, groups, organisations, leaders, and ecclesia face-to-face in Exeter and Dawlish.

Modern technology also allows me to communicate both nationally and internationally with clients via Skype, Zoom …

This is my 1st attempt at writing a website. I hope it is helpful – any suggestions to make it more user friendly, please get in touch!

Making the decision to see a counsellor is a big step to take - but it can be a positive one. Please read on to find out more about how I could help you.

How can counselling help?

We all have times of difficulty in our lives when feelings can be overwhelming, or we experience a loss of direction or purpose. Talking to a trained professional counsellor can help us make sense of those challenging times and offer a way through them, moving towards a better understanding of ourselves and our feelings.

My role as a counsellor, is to provide a safe place and guidance to help you on your journey of self-discovery. I offer you a chance to reflect on and express freely the feelings and situations you are experiencing in a safe and confidential environment with someone from outside your everyday life. In this safe place, I’m able to listen with sensitivity, empathy and without judgement.

Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives. Counselling in a person-centred way isn’t about giving you solutions or advice, but rather, empowering you to make your own changes.

About Me

By visiting Rockhaven Counselling and Therapy website you’ve taken an important step in discovering my approach to counselling and personal therapy.

30+ years ago, people came to see me because I was known in the community. Nowadays, with the internet, this has changed. What follows is an opportunity to learn a little more about me, particularly as you might well be sharing and trusting something of your life story and circumstances with me.

School:

was an academic disaster as I was an undiagnosed and profoundly dyslexic pupil, being physically punished weekly for not being able to spell my own name and address. Despite this ongoing abuse I did, however, represent the school at hockey and at the county sports for rugby and was captain and school chess champion for 3 years.

Musically:

I was successful: at 6 years old, I gave my first solo public performance; at 12, I cut my 1st record; at 15, I had my own guitar group; and at 19, passed Grade 7 in classical singing.

Career:

Aged 19, I was selected by Hammond Organs of America and given the opportunity to hone my sales, teaching and demonstrating abilities.

In my early twenties, I married and moved from Bournemouth to Exeter and set up my own recording studio, whilst continuing in various aspects in the music industry, and developing my business and management skills.

Within 6 weeks of marriage, we had a knock on the door: ‘My friend is homeless: can you help?’ This evolved into our 1st long-term therapeutic encounter as we helped ‘Paul’ piece his life together till he was able to successfully move on. This literally opened the door for hundreds of people over the years to stay, both short-and long-term, or to use our home as a place of refuge or retreat. We formalised this in 1985 when we set up Rockhaven Therapy providing support for folks from all walks of life, beliefs, and orientation.

As an autodidactic, I have learnt so much from the people living with us - from musicians, those caught in cults, university students and lecturers, the abused and abusers, those dealing with addictions, relationship breakdowns, right up to the homeless who I discovered had devised amazing and intuitive survival techniques.

All of my school and career experiences fed into my professional training as a counsellor, life coach and later, as a supervisor: my creative way of working, being a dyslexic and having the ability to think outside of the box was embraced and accredited.

Prior to a debilitating car crash, with a colleague I also ran Rockhaven Music & Adventure Therapy. This included camping, the use of boats, Landrovers, guitars…

I’m still open to new ideas and ways of working!

Now with 50 years of marriage I also enjoy meeting couples and sharing experiences.
